Parashat Terumah / פרשת תרומה
Parashat Terumah is the 19th weekly reading in the annual Torah reading cycle, and the seventh reading of Shemot (“Exodus”). Terumah (תְּרוּמָה) is Hebrew for Contribution and is the 12th word of the parashah, which includes HaShem’s instructions, which He spoke to Moshe (Moses) atop Sinai, concerning the Mikdash (Sanctuary) that Bnei Yisrael (the Children of Israel) are to make for HaShem; that HaShem may dwell in our midst.
The parashah begins with HaShem’s instructions to Moshe concerning the contribution he is to receive from every man of Bnei Yisrael whose own heart moves him to give, of the materials needed for the making of the Mikdash, its furnishings, and the articles of clothing and accessories for the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) and the Kohanim (Priests). The parashah records the specific materials to be received.
The remainder of Parashat Terumah relates HaShem’s instructions to Moshe concerning the making, carrying, configuration, and purpose of Aron HaEdut (the Ark of the Testimony), the Shulkhan (Table), together with its accessories, the Menorah (Lampstand), together with its utensils, the Mishkan (Tabernacle), the Pharokhet (Veil) to separate HaKodesh (the Holy [Place]) from Kodesh HaKodashim (the Holy of Holies), the Ohel (Tent) of the Mishkan, the covering of the Ohel, the curtain for the entrance of the Mishkan, the Mizbeach (Altar) of burnt offering, the court of the Mikdash, and the curtain for the entrance of the Mikdash.
